Rule #1 High Na+

- Diabetes Insipidus (DI)

  • The body excretes massive amounts of clear urine, removing vast amounts of fluid. 

 
Rule #2 Low Na+
- Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH)

  • Water retiention

- Addison’s disease

- Psychogenic polydipsiahe

  • client cannot stop drinking water

- Meds (Diuretic)

  • Spironolactone (Retain K+ but loss water and Na+)
  • Hydrochlorothiazide (Retain Ca+ but loss water and Na+)
    • when used for nephrogenic DI, it can increase the proximal sodium and water reabsorption, thereby reducing the urine output.
